Interim Head of School

Job Summary:

As the chief executive officer of the school, the Head of School establishes the vision and executes the stated mission of the school, manages faculty and staff, and ensures the financial health of the institution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Interim Head of School will:

  • Work in partnership with the board of trustees to manifest and refine the school’s mission and strategic future; articulate that mission to all constituencies, including students, faculty and staff, parents, alumni/ae, and the broader community; and embody and represent the mission of the school with all constituencies.
  • Keep the board of trustees informed on all aspects of the school’s operation; represent the board to the faculty, staff, students, parents, and other constituencies.
  • Provide leadership in shaping the school’s programs (academic, athletic, and other extracurricular offerings).
  • Supervise the leadership team and oversee their supervision of the rest of the staff to ensure that school policies are followed.
  • Be responsible for attracting, selecting, hiring, retaining, developing, and evaluating properly qualified faculty and staff, as well as terminating personnel when needed.
  • Supervise the financial management, maintenance of the physical plant, strategic planning, and fund-raising efforts of the school.
  • Maintain school culture and quality of life, provide a safe environment for learning.
  • Ensure that every element of school life reflects the principles of equity, justice, and the dignity of each individual.
  • Understand educational trends and the local and regional educational landscape.
  • Communicate effectively with all constituencies, including students, faculty and staff, parents, and alumni/ae.
  • Represent the school with integrity within the broader network of schools and the community.
  • Abide by principles of good practice in all school operations – particularly admission, marketing, faculty recruitment, and fundraising.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree required
  • Proven success in a senior administrative role for seven or more years
  • Successful teaching experience and demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Commitment to academic goals of students and the mission and philosophy of the school

Full-Time Marketing and Communications Associate

Benchmark School seeks to immediately fill a full-time position for a 12-month Marketing and Communications Associate. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications and working closely with other key school personnel, the Marketing and Communications Associate will play an important role in communicating the vision, the voice and the brand identity of Benchmark through skillful storytelling in written publications, digital and print platforms, and social media. The position requires a range of communication and technical skills including written communication, social media, graphic design, photography, videography, and website content management. The ideal candidate is creative, self-motivated, and technically-skilled, with a proven ability to take complex projects from start to finish. 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Cultivate relationships with print and electronic media, and initiate, write and distribute articles to various media
  • Write, design, edit, and proofread the semi-annual Benchmark Magazine, Annual Report, and additional school publications, as assigned.
  • Ensure that all publications are consistent with Benchmark and AP style guidelines
  • Assist in monitoring and updating the school’s website and social media content
  • Attend, photograph, and report on school events, including those that may occur during evenings and on weekends
  • Gather competitive bids for print materials and act as the primary contact with printers to see projects through to successful and timely completion
  • Support Benchmark’s visual brand presentation by taking, organizing and sharing photography and videography from school events throughout the year
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in journalism or communications field
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Proficient in social media, Microsoft Office Suite, Quark, InDesign, photography and videography
  • Strong visual/design skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Highly motivated and ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a team member

Part-Time School Nurse

Position description:

Benchmark School is seeking a candidate for the position of School Nurse, part-time.  The position hours are Thursday and Friday: 8:30 AM-3:00 PM, plus scheduled field trips. Potential need for additional hours on Wednesdays from 12:00-3:00 PM. This is a 10-month position. Start date is April 3, 2019.

  • Oversees all health issues in the school as they relate to students and faculty/staff
  • Communicates with parents on health needs of children
  • Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services
  • Provides staff development on health-related topics
  • Educates students on health and wellness
  • Provides relief coverage for co-worker for vacation/sick time when possible
  • Attends field trips as needed
  • Maintains electronic health records and works with district nurse to maintain state mandated health records
  • Collaborates with Child and Family Support Services and faculty to best address health needs from a team approach
  • Monitors safety of community
  • Responds to health related emergencies and provides care
  • Works closely with main office staff and supports as necessary

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with children
  • RN active PA license, BSN
  • CPR/First Aid certification
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Full-Time Art Teacher (Beginning Sept 2019)

Position description:

In this full-time (8:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily) position, you serve as part of a talented and caring team of experts (e.g., supervisor, counselor, art teacher). Specific responsibilities for this position are:  teaching students a variety of methods and approaches to learning the concepts and skills associated with art fundamentals, principles of composition, and aesthetic concepts; planning for each activity by ordering supplies, creating models, setting up and cleaning up; working with classrooms teachers on special projects; collaborating with the director of innovation and other teachers on cross-curricular design thinking projects; integrating 21st century skills into the art curriculum; painting and other tasks connected to the middle school musical production; after school art clubs.  Major responsibilities for this position include:

  • Creating a warm and supportive environment that fosters confidence, risk-taking, and respect for all
  • Providing explicit instruction of thinking and learning strategies within an inquiry-based model
  • Engaging students in the creative process while building a classroom culture in which students understand and feel excited about art, design, and art history
  • Assessing students’ strengths and challenges and scaffolding instruction accordingly
  • Establishing routines, maintaining consistent expectations, and employing effective management techniques
