About

Founded in 1970, Benchmark School serves students in grades 1-8 with learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD, auditory processing issues, and other learning differences.

At Benchmark School, our unique research-based, evidence-informed approach teaches students how to become confident and competent learners.

We are intentional about cultivating an accepting and supportive climate that allows our students the space to flourish as learners and to make lasting friendships.

Our classes are intentionally small, with no more than 13 students per classroom and multiple teachers in all language arts and math classrooms.

Beyond the classroom, we offer a range of extracurricular activities, athletics, workshops, and special events throughout the year that enrich students’ and families' engagement in our school community.

Benchmark School is an independent, co-educational school for bright children in grades 1-8 who learn differently. Learn about the students we serve.

Over any of the other options for learning differences schools, we felt Benchmark had the strongest program—a thoughtful balance of learning support and executive functioning support with a thriving community.

We believe that fulfilling the school’s educational mission depends on:

  • Our belief is that every child at the school can learn.

  • Empowering students to be self-regulated learners who understand their approach to learning and are confident self-advocates.

  • Encouraging a growth mindset in students where they become innovative, reflective, and open-minded problem solvers.

  • Meeting students where they are and scaffolding instruction to help them meet their goals.

  • Supporting the whole child in the academic and social-emotional realms with strategies to help them be successful.

  • Celebrating each student for their uniqueness.

  • Creating a climate where everyone feels safe and respected and where students are encouraged and supported to take risks.

  • Having positive, constructive working relationships among the school, each student, and each student’s family.

  • Building a relationship with families that deepens over the years and endures even after students graduate.

Benchmark School is accredited by the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS), which is a member in good standing of the National Association of Independent School's (NAIS) Commission on Accreditation.
